Pet Safety Tips for Fall & Winter Weather by Chuck and Don's
WALKING YOUR
DOG AT NIGHT
As the days grow shorter, you may find yourself taking evening walks in the dark. These handy tips will help keep you and your pup safe:
Make sure you and your dog are visible by donning reflective gear and light-up accessories.
Bring a flashlight or headlamp so you can easily keep an eye on your dog (and pick up their poop) after the sun sets. Remember doggy bags and a dooloop for hands-free carrying.
If your pup loves to play, bring along some light-up or glow-in-the-dark toys and find a safe spot for a game.
KEEPING PETS COZY AND
SAFE IN WINTER WEATHER
While they may be our personal lap warmers, pets can get chilly throughout the fall and winter months. Here are the best ways to help them stay toasty:
Dress to Impress: Layering up is essential to maintaining your pet’s body temperature in winter weather. Sweaters and jackets can be beneficial for shorthaired dogs and small dogs who lose their body heat faster. Water-repellent gear can protect any pup from freezing rain and snow. (Just make sure it covers their belly for optimal comfort.)
Nose-to-Toes Protection: It’s important to shield your dog’s sensitive areas from the elements. Use a paw balm to protect your pet’s paw pads against snow, ice and salt. Dog booties can also help keep their feet warm and dry. If it’s a particularly cold or windy day, make sure to apply a nose balm to prevent frostbite and try to limit their time outdoors.
The Golden Rule of Winter: Always remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them. Even bundled up, pets can be susceptible to freezing temperatures and wind chill. You can limit time outdoors by not staying out any longer than you need to.
Winter Coat Upkeep: Letting your dog’s coat grow out may make them look warmer. But untamed hair can easily become matted, failing to keep your pup warm and even causing them pain. Instead, prioritize at-home care along with regular grooming to keep their coat healthy.
Time for a Trim: Are your walks shorter due to cold weather? With less mileage to wear them down, your dog’s nails may need more frequent trimming. Pick up some nail clippers or book a trim with a groomer.
PRO TIP:
It can take a while for your pup to adjust to dog booties, so it's best to ease into things slowly (with lots of treats and encouragement). Start by putting booties only on their front feet. Then play or go on a walk so they associate their new shoes with fun times. Repeat with booties only on their back feet. Once your dog is comfortable, you can slip on the whole set for everyday outings.
PROVIDING ENTERTAINMENT
& NOURISHMENT
On chilly days, spending time in a warm place with hearty dishes and engaging activities is the perfect way to pass the time.
Treat Them to a Warm Meal: Because cold air carries less moisture, it can lead to dehydration. A dull coat or dry skin can be a sign that your pet needs more moisture in their diet. To keep them hydrated, try adding a warm bone broth or goat milk topper to their bowl and make sure to keep their water bowl full.
Train Their Brain: When it’s too cold to spend time outside, set up some fun indoor enrichment activities to keep your pet engaged. Mental stimulation can be just as tiring for them as a long walk. Plus, brain games help with bonding and boosting confidence.
Something to Chew On: Chews are some of the best boredom-busters around. They’re mentally stimulating and help clean your pet’s teeth. Check out our Chew Guide to find the perfect pick for your dog or cat.
Super Supplements: Supplements can deliver nourishment and comfort throughout the coldest months of the year. Wondering which are best for your pet? Visit our Supplement Guide for everything you need to know.
