QUESTION:

What can I feed my litlte old lady cat that is hyperthyroid and needs to put on weight?? Oh, and she is also very finicky...of course! Thanks! >"<

ANSWER:

Hi Debra,

My first recommendation would be to speak with your veterinarian regarding dietary requirements for this condition, if you have not already done so.

From what is understood, hyperthyroidism can be a precursor to kidney disease, which requires a low protein diet. Considering this, a low protein diet would make sense at this point. At Chuck & Don's we do not carry any prescription foods, due to not having a veterinarian on staff. However, we do have some wet cat foods that have lower minimum protein levels compared to others that we carry. Again, Chuck & Don's recommends checking with your veterinarian to see if these would meet the dietary requirements for your cat. Below is a list for you to refer to:

Food
Minimum Protein %
Halo Spot's Stew Chicken
4.5%
Halo Spot's Stew Salmon
5.5%

Science Diet Culinary Creations Roasted Chicken 6.0% Science Diet Culinary Creations Roasted Beef 6.0% Science Diet Culinary Creations Baked Ocean Fish 8.0% Science Diet Culinary Creations Baked Tuna 8.0% Wellness Healthy Indulgence Chicken & Chicken Liver 8.0% Wellness Healthy Indulgence Chicken, Crab, & Herring 8.0% Wellness Healthy Indulgence Chicken, Duck & Shrimp 8.0% Wellness Healthy Indulgence Turkey & Chicken 8.0% Wellness Healthy Indulgence Turkey & Duck 8.0% Wellness Healthy Indulgence Salmon & Chicken 8.0% Natural Balance Duck & Green Pea 8.5% Natural Balance Chicken & Green Pea 8.5%

Many of the other wet cat foods we carry have minimum protein levels of 9% - 10% and higher.

I hope that this information is helpful to you and that you are able to find foods that are suitable for your cat's situation and that she will enjoy.

Let us know if we can be of help to you in the future
