| QUESTION:
Jingles is five year old and does not like to be brush. He has long hair and it gets matted. What can I do for this? |
| ANSWER:
Hi Mary Lou, Thank you for contacting me regarding Jingles and the issue you are having with brushing your cat's hair. Because your cat has long hair, brushing is necessary to prevent mats. By brushing her a little bit at a time, she will start getting used to it and become more receptive. The hardest part is making the commitment of brushing her for a couple minutes at a time, several times a day to get her used to it. If she tries to bite you, don't react, just stop brushing her and pet her instead. Let her go if she becomes uncontrollable. If none of this is possible, you can take her to a vet or a groomer and they can cut the mats out or shave the cat. Once the cat's mats have been taken care of and you can start fresh, try the Kong Zoom Groom. It is an inexpensive grooming tool that most cats like even if they don't like being brushed. This product, if used several times daily, will prevent your cat from matting. It will not, however, do anything to help detangle an existing mat. Once your cat realizes that letting you brush her with a Zoom Groom for a few minutes a day will prevent her from the pain caused from matting she will become more tolerant. Hope this helps!
