QUESTION:

I will be adopting my first cat in the next two months and am wondering what the best type of food to give it. I have been researching between wet and dry food. I am leaning more towards the wet food. What do you recommend for your customers? Is there anything I should be looking for or avoiding when finding a good cat food? I have also been researching cat litter. Is it true that clumping litter is not very safe for a cat?

ANSWER:

Hi Julie,

First off I'd like to say 'Thank You' for considering to adopt a pet!

Dry or wet cat food? This question is frequently asked by customers. There isn't any definite answer. What to feed depends on many things such as age, allergies, health problems, and activity level. For a healthy younger cat I will typically suggest a diet of dry food with the option to occasionally treat the cat with wet food. Eating the dry food helps clean their teeth and is significantly less expensive. If you have an older cat with kidney problems or sensitive teeth than wet food is often the best choice.

A good quality food will have the first ingredient as some type of meat. Chicken or chicken meal is the most common. When you look at the rest of the ingredients you just want to make sure that there aren't a lot of fillers. More fillers equals more waste in the litter box. Pearled barley, millet, rice and potatoes are all an excellent source of carbohydrates. Ingredients such as unidentified by-products should try to be avoided.

Clumping cat litter is definitely safe for cats. I would recommend trying a cat litter that is made out of corn, wheat, or pine. World's Best cat litter is made out of corn and is safe enough that cats or litter box robbing pooches can eat it. It is also completely bio-degradable and can safely be flushed down the toilet.
