QUESTION:

I was hoping you could help me with a cat question or direct me to someone who could. I have a male Siamese cat (Simon) who is 1.5 yrs old. I rescued him from Happy Tails at 2 months. At that time he was just neutered and had a bladder infection. He also had the tip of his tail amputated because the vet said it was "dead." He also had one more condition, when he was dropped off at Happy Tails he was a bottle baby and could not walk. Slowly he learned to hop and now he wobbles but has no trouble jumping and running.

So the problem I am having is the urinating! He will go where ever he wants, and some places are very strange. He will go in the shower, sink, corners, blankets, next to his litter box, on his toys, so basically he goes everywhere.

First I brought him to the vet to rule out a bladder infection because he had two when I first got him. I had two vets (One in North Branch and the other at Camden) do cultures and he was fine. So the first thing I did was shampoo the carpets with Nature's Miracle from Chuck and Dons. I bought some Feliway and sprayed it everywhere except his litter boxes and food area. This didn't work so then I bought some carpet runners that have the little nubs on the back to hold it in place on the carpets. Well I bought clear and flipped them upside down so the nubs where up. I though this would not be fun to step on so he would leave that area alone, but I was wrong he still urinated there. Then I got some Duct tape and added that to the runners so the sticky side was up. This works a little bit better, but sometimes he will get on it. I do not have any other cats and there no kids in the house. I got him two litter boxes and I clean them out every day. He has always been on good food too. He eats Wellness and Blue to mix it up. I also give him canned food. I bought him the special litter from Chuck and Dons but I can't remember what it is called. Last week I even bought Boundary, which works for a day. He is a very good cat and I could never ever get rid of him but I need some help here. Please help me.

ANSWER:

Hi Michelle,

Chuck & Don's is sorry to hear that you are having an issue with Simon urinating outside of his litter box. There could be many reasons that this is occurring. There is a good website that discusses many possible causes for cats eliminating themselves outside of their litter box. Here is the link:
http://cats.about.com/cs/litterboxproblems/a/urinewoes.htm

If everything they suggest is ruled out you could consult an animal behaviorist. One I can suggest in the Twin Cities is Carol Propotnik-Newby. Her website is:

It sounds as though Simon has been through a lot for his young age. Chuck & Don's commends you for rescuing Simon and working towards finding a cause and solution to the current issue you are experiencing. We hope that the information we have provided will be of help to you and Simon. Please let us know if you determine the cause of Simon's issue with not using the litter box, and keep us posted on his progress.

Chuck & Don's wishes you and Simon all the best.
