| QUESTION:
Wow, just discovered your Highland store when my husband & I went to the buffet next door for dinner. For sure I'll be buying sunflower chips from you for the birds! Welcome! My question: About 3 years ago we got a kitten for company for our older cat. Now the kitten is an adult and tends to bully our older cat. When there's a confrontation, should I pick up the bullying younger cat or the older one, who's pretty shy? Thanks!!! |
| ANSWER:
Hi Darlene, My first question would be: Are both cats altered? If not this can curb aggression. Do both cats have their own territory, ie. beds, litter boxes etc? Sometimes the older cat will become aggressive after the kitten matures imitating the "get out of the nest response". Things to do when a fight occurs would include making a loud noise such as using a whistle or hissing. This can startle the cats and redirect their attention. You can also gently scruff the aggressive cat for a moment. The timid cat will typically run away. After this speak gently to and pet the aggressor for a minute to reassure them. This imitates mothers cats disciplinary behavior. If necessary give a "time out" and temporarily separate the cats. The Feliway outlet diffuser may help. It releases friendly cat pheromones which help calm cats. Hope this helps and good luck! "The Chuck" |
